FRIDAY - OCTOBER 24, 2003 - ISSUE NO. 81

Dear Friends and Industry Colleagues,

I hope everyone had a good week. There is some very good advice for wireless carriers from Reed Hundt, former FCC chairman, in one of the following news articles. It is from his keynote address at the last day of the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment show in Las Vegas this week.

I apologize for my recent comments about Motorola. It is a great company and I have many good friends who are both current and former Motorola employees. It is just coincidental that readers sent me copies of articles critical of Motorola, two weeks in a row. This one company has made such major contributions to the world of wireless communications over the last 75 years, that it is difficult to even describe them. Motorola has always stood firmly for the most important business principles: honesty, respect for people, total customer satisfaction, and integrity without compromise. I wholeheartedly supported their policies when I was an employee and continue to do so today.

Someone asked me the other day if I represent any of the companies that advertise in my newsletter. YES —almost all of them! If you see anything that you want please let me know. I am an authorized Manufacturer Representative (MR) for most of them, and they help pay my rent and my electric bill if you let them know you saw their company's advertisement in this newsletter. —Thanks, gracias, and obrigado.

Be sure to read the press release from our colleagues at SkyTel Argentina about the change in ownership there, and join me in wishing them good success with the new management team headed by Felipe Sklar.

This is my weekly newsletter about Wireless Data and Radio Paging. You are receiving this message because you have either communicated with me in the past about a wireless topic, or your address was included in another e-mail that I received on the same subject. This is not a SPAM. If you have received this message in error, or you are not interested in these topics, please click here, then click on “send” and you will be promptly removed from the mailing list with my apologies.

A new issue of the Paging and Wireless Data Newsletter gets posted on the web each week. A notification goes out by e-mail to subscribers on most Fridays around noon Eastern US time. The notification message has a link to the actual newsletter on the Internet. That way it doesn't fill up your incoming e-mail account.

There is no charge for subscription and there are no membership restrictions. Readers are a very select group of wireless industry professionals, and include the senior managers of many of the world's major paging and wireless data companies. There is an even mix of operations managers, marketing people, and engineers, so I try to include items of interest to all three groups. It's all about staying up-to-date with business trends and technology.

I regularly get reader's comments, so this newsletter has become a community forum for the paging, and wireless data communities. You are welcome to contribute your ideas and opinions. Unless otherwise requested, all correspondence addressed to me is subject to publication in the newsletter and on my website.

NOTE: This newsletter is best viewed at screen resolutions of 800x600 (good) or 1024x768 (better). Any current revision of web browser should work just fine. Please notify me of any problems with viewing. This site is compliant with XHTML 1.0 transitional coding for easy access from wireless devices. (XML 1.0 / ISO 8859-1)

I had the pleasure of being the convention speaker at the Atlantic States Telephone Answering Association (ASTAA) in Annapolis, Maryland this week. I met many interesting people and made a lot of new friends. It is very encouraging to see the Telephone Answering Service Industry doing so well. These folks have survived by diversifying their services and being nice to their customers. It should be no surprise that many people would much prefer talking to a live operator than to a machine. The theme of this year's convention was "Back to Basics" which I thought was very good.

It is very important that the synergy between TAS operators and Paging Carriers continue, and that it be strengthened as well. For this to happen we must improve the communication between these two vital industries. I plan to include articles from TAS Industry spokespersons in future issues of this newsletter, hopefully starting next week. Comments are welcome.

Here is some background information on the TAS Industry:

The size of the fee based TAS/Call Center market has been stable, and is now expanding in relation to the growth of its clients in the medical, professional and Small Office-Home Office (SOHO) business market. According to the DOL (Department Of Labor) there are 8,843 locations that are outbound/inbound and/or fee based calling centers which employee 511,000 people (US dept. of labor, 2000 County Business, OES [Occupational Employment Statistics], June 24). This represents the broad figures on all fee based TAS/Call Centers which include multiple locations for the same organization. There are approximately 4,450 TAS (answering services which include medical answering services) with gross annual revenues of $2.7 Billion. They service 2.29 million clients and average about 514 clients each and generate an average of $627,000 yearly. (Peter DeHaan, Ph.D. Connections Magazine) The fee based TAS industry employs 227,000 full time operators according to the U.S. Dept of Labor's 2001 National Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates. Their primary client base, the medical industry is growing.

Regional Paging Network Looking For Members

I had the pleasure of meeting Randy Murray of Redi-Call at the ASTAA convention this week. Randy is building an impressive regional paging network that currently covers from Kennedy airport on Long Island, all the way down the East Coast to the northern part of North Carolina. This network is called CH7Net and the details of how it works follow.

Redi-Call CH7NetWHAT IS CH7Net?

Ch7Net is a paging network being formed by VHF carriers to provide wide area coverage through the exchange of traffic on a common channel.

Redi-Call CH7NetWHO ARE WE?

Ch7Net was formed when Redi-Call Communications Co. (Georgetown, DE) and Salisbury Communications (Salisbury, MD) built a jointly owned paging system on RCC Channel 7 (152.120 Mhz) across much of the mid-Atlantic (see our history and our present coverage map). When the FCC’s Auction 40 occurred in 2001, Redi-Call and Salisbury formed a bidding consortium and purchased several EA's in the Eastern US. With the grant of these EA Licenses and coordination with existing co-channel users, it will be possible to operate a common network across all of this territory.

1. You currently operate on 152.120 Mhz OR

2. You purchased an EA License for 152.120 Mhz in any area of the US OR

3. You currently operate a paging system on any VHF channel in any of the EA areas we purchased in Auction 40 (your system must be capable of including 152.120 as an additional channel).

Doctor's Cell Phones May Spread Hospital Infections

Wed Sep 17, 6:11 PM ET

CHICAGO (Reuters Health)—Mobile phones used by healthcare personnel in the hospital can spread dangerous infectious agents, according to investigators in Israel.

In 2002, Dr. Abraham Borer, of Soroka University Medical Center in Beer-Sheva, and others randomly screened 124 hospital personnel for the germ Acinetobacter baumannii, a common source of in-hospital infections.

They found that 12 percent of healthcare providers' cell phones were contaminated with the bug, the researchers reported here during the annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

The results are disturbing because Acinetobacter baumannii has the propensity to develop resistance to almost all available antibiotics. It is especially dangerous because it "can survive on dry surfaces for a long period of time," Borer told Reuters Health.

"Cell phones provide a large dry surface that allows survival of A. baumannii—it requires no nutrients," he added.

A. baumannii is found in intensive care units, and the mortality rate among infected patients is very high—between 50 and 60 percent—Borer explained.

The bacterium was found not only on phones but also on 24 percent of the hands of the people tested, who included 71 physicians and 53 nurses.

"You can wash your hands correctly, as the guidelines recommend, but 'autoinfestion' commonly occurs" when cell phones are used by medical personnel in the hospital, the investigator said.

The use of mobile phones by medical personnel while they're caring for patients is no longer permitted at his institution.

Before this study was conducted, cell phones had completely replaced the traditional pagers among physicians and nurses. "We are now exploring the possibility of using pagers again or some type of device that can be worn on the wrist that doesn't require hand contact," Borer said.

Seek Value Customers, Hundt Warns

October 23, 2003

LAS VEGAS—Wireless carriers should pay less attention to generating as many new subscribers as they can and pay more attention to their valuable subscribers, Reed Hundt, former FCC chairman, said today.

In a keynote address at the last day of the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment show, Hundt said 70 percent of the new subscribers coming to major U.S. carriers are the result of churn. He added that industry wide, total net new subscribers is in the single digits.

The wireless industry needs to take the example of the financial industry, Hundt said, and focus more on retaining valuable customers than on acquiring new ones. This could mean that the carriers would jettison subscribers who ultimately cost them money.

"The fundamental problem is that you don't want to keep swapping customers back and forth," Hundt said, adding that carriers need to pay attention to individual customer data so they can bill and market to them based on their overall value.

The former FCC chairman also said the one thing that has surprised him about the wireless industry in the last few years has been its entrepreneurial capability and innovation. The wireless industry has been much more innovative than the wireline industry, he said, especially in moving into the broadband market.

salcom logo

SALCOM designs and manufactures a range of VHF and UHF FM radio transmitters and receivers to integrate with systems data equipment as well as for voice operation. The design philosophy has always been to be low cost and yet meet the most demanding compliance requirements. Salcom's synthesized UHF and VHF transmitters, receivers and transceivers are utilized in many areas of the telecommunications industry, often in conjunction with Salcom signalling products. To realize additional market segments for the RF products, specialized OEM products have been developed utilizing the standard core technology. Most of these products are utilized in third party telecommunications and telemetry systems.

Salcom manufactures an extensive range of POCSAG paging products suited to a wide range of system applications such as remote switching, automatic machine monitoring, security and fire alarm systems and nurse calling systems.

A transceiver has been developed to meet the demand for a low cost, simple to use, fully immersible, floatable emergency radio. It provides a means of communication from aircraft to personnel in distress where they can not be reached and no alternative communication method exists.

Would You Like To Advertise Here? If you have any wireless equipment that you would like to buy or sell, please let me know. I don't charge individuals for listing something for sale. If a sale is made through this newsletter, I ask the seller to send me a 10% commission, much the same as the voluntary payments that are requested on the Internet for shareware. It's on the honor system. There is no cost to the buyer.

There is a small charge for companies wanting to put their products in the newsletter and on my web site. There is no obligation for payment of a commission for this kind of basic advertising. I would be very pleased, however, to get involved in the sales process as a manufacturer representative—for quality wireless products and reputable companies.

It's only $15.38 per issue for the basic advertising package. ($400 for 6 months or 26 issues.)

Regional Paging Company Is Still Available

A US paging company is being offered for sale. Their main coverage areas include San Antonio and Houston. They hold exclusive frequencies in Texas, Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, Southern Alabama, and the panhandle of Florida up to and including Jacksonville. They also hold licenses in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. I have prepared a page with more information about the company and their assets. Please note that this information is not completely up to date and that it is being presented as "typical" and "planned" only. Please get in touch with me if you are interested. None of this information is warranted as being totally correct and current. Part of a potential buyers "due diligence" would be to inspect and verify the company and its assets before purchase. This is a unique opportunity for someone. Please click here for more information and then call me.

Please recommend the newsletter to your friends and co-workers. Remember subscription is without cost or obligation. Also please mention my name when talking to any of the advertisers. Thanks a lot.
