FRIDAY - MARCH 31, 2006 - ISSUE NO. 206 |
Dear friends of Wireless Messaging, Well, spring has arrived. It's 75º (F.) here in Southern Illinois today. A photographer friend of mine shot this photo in Washington, DC on Wednesday.
More of his work on page three. Alfred, Lord Tennyson once penned, “In the spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” So what happens to an old man's fancy? Baseball, politics, fixing the rocking chair, and doctor's appointments? Bah! I found some more submissions to The FCC's Independent Panel Reviewing the Impact of Hurricane Katrina on Communications Networks and you will find them throughout the three pages of this issue. I hope you enjoy it. Hector Rodrigo, an experienced paging engineer in Mississippi, is looking for
a job. You can download his resumé here. I am sorry that I don't have any news about the American Messaging / Verizon Paging deal. Several people from both companies have signed up for the newsletter recently, and I suspect that you all want to know what's going on. Well, so do I. Just as soon as I find any verifiable details, I will let you know. From what I am hearing "off the record" it sounds like a done deal. Stay tuned. Now on to more news and views |
A new issue of The Wireless Messaging Newsletter gets posted on the web each week. A notification goes out by e-mail to subscribers on most Fridays around noon central US time. The notification message has a link to the actual newsletter on the Internet. That way it doesn't fill up your incoming e-mail account. There is no charge for subscription and there are no membership restrictions. Readers are a very select group of wireless industry professionals, and include the senior managers of many of the world's major Paging and Wireless Data companies. There is an even mix of operations managers, marketing people, and engineers—so I try to include items of interest to all three groups. It's all about staying up-to-date with business trends and technology. I regularly get reader's comments, so this newsletter has become a community forum for the Paging, and Wireless Data communities. You are welcome to contribute your ideas and opinions. Unless otherwise requested, all correspondence addressed to me is subject to publication in the newsletter and on my web site. I am very careful to protect the anonymity of those who request it. NOTE: This newsletter is best viewed at screen resolutions of 800x600 (good) or 1024x768 (better). Any current revision of web browser should work fine. Please notify me of any problems with viewing. Telenor Launches First Global Satellite Phones
With new satellite equipment from the Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor, you can make calls and send faxes, data and e-mail to and from almost everywhere on earth.
News of Norway, issue 9, 1996
"We are very exited... and even at this very early stage, trials have been going extremely well," said Telenor satellite services managing director Knut Reed "This product means that all travelers, from aid workers to businessmen, will be able to go literally anywhere in the world secure in the knowledge" that they can keep in touch with each other and the home office.
Through satellites in stationary orbits high above the earth, users of this new "world telephone" may communicate with any telephone user in the world. The price of this phone is around $4,000, and fees for calls are about $3 a minute. The equipment is easy to use and weighs only about four pounds. The new telephone functions just like an ordinary GMS mobile phone and runs on batteries that can be recharged by car generators.
Developing the world smallest satellite phone required teamwork. It started in 1992 as 30 researchers and engineers from NERA, another Norwegian telecommunications company, joined the development team. Telenor also received help from SINTEF and NTNU in Trondheim.
Norwegian Telenor Satellite Services is now cooperating with British Telecom to offer global services. Together they market the new product as Mobiq.
Firm’s History
On January 1, 1995, Televerket AS changed its name to Telenor AS. The company that had been state-owned emerged with a business-orientated organization. With some 18,500 employees and annual revenue of 20 billion kroner,Telenor is one of the biggest companies in Norway. Its operations are divided into seven areas.
The company is Norway’s market leader in the fields of telecommunications, data services and media distribution. Its services cover everything from simple telephone subscriptions to installation and operation of complete information technology systems. Internationally Telenor concentrates on mobile telephony and on strengthening its leading position in satellite communications.
In Europe Telenor AS is now a leading provider of international satellite operations and terrestrial wireless systems. It operates cellular and paging businesses in Norway, Poland, Hungary and Russia, and has the highest traffic earth station within IMMARSAT satellite networks. Telenor has annual revenues of about $3 billion.
NORCOM- Sister Company in the USA
NORCOM Networks Corporation, a subsidiary of Telnor AS, is the first U.S. provider of a high-speed, mobile satellite communications network that serves the commercial vehicle industry. It is located in McLean, Virginia, near the nation’s capital, and its largest shareholder is Telenor. The company’s services branch, NORNET, offers coverage throughout North America.
A mobile satellite network is a wireless communication system that uses satellites to relay signals to and from mobile units such as cars, trucks, ships and airplanes. A satellite network’s use is functionally similar to that of ground-based mobile radio and cellular services. However, because satellite service is largely unaffected by distance or terrain, mobile satellite systems provide communications service to customers with wide-area coverage needs. Truck drivers that deliver goods across long distances, across the United States, for example, may use this system to advantage. I In addition to the commercial vehicle market, NORCOM’s key markets are maritime, aeronautical, governmental and fixed-site. The fixed-site data networks include security systems and natural gas, crude oil, propane and water pipelines. NORCOM will begin commercial operations in early 1997 with a staff of around 40.

Devices give weather at-a-glance
By Stokely Baksh Mar 31, 2006, 4:00 GMT
WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI)—A variety of new and novel devices are changing the way consumers get their weather—including such techno items as a weather-forecasting umbrella.
The fusion of various objects and technology has sparked much consumer interest by providing the simplest of practical convergent devices.
The Cambridge, Mass-based company Ambient Devices Inc. is a leading maker of 'glanceable' forecasting devices using wireless technology and is winning over praise since its start in the fall of 2001. The company aims not to crowd consumers with a number of features but rather produce objects that are so-called polite technology.
'Ambient devices are a new category of devices, I call them 'calm computing'—you don`t interact with it like a cell phone,' said Ambient President David Rose. 'These devices allow you to do one thing at a time; it`s really pleasant, polite than other electronic devices that require a lot of attention. You'll never be bugged by your orb.'
All of Ambient`s devices use a wireless solution, the Ambient Information Network and the Ambient Device Design, which creates an infrastructure of back-end service delivery and wireless network and a set of hardware specifications to turn everyday objects into glanceable information devices.
The company, aside from its products, also licenses this technology out to other companies aimed with the same goal such as GPS systems for cars allowing for individuals to know traffic congestion, or LG refrigerators with weather forecasts.
But their latest anticipated device is the 'Forecasting Umbrella' set to debut in summer 2006 and the 'E Ink Weather Wizard' this fall.
The Forecasting Umbrella uses proprietary data-radio in the handle, which receives accuweather.com information and pulses when rain is forecast.
Battery-operated, its handle also glows to remind a forgetful individual to take the umbrella with them.
Meanwhile, the E Ink Weather Wizard is a thin display mounted to the wall, refrigerator or used as a bedside clock, and shows the 'Atomic time' with current conditions and the five-day forecast, according to the company.
Using batteries, it too connects to accuweather.com, updating the forecasts every hour, using weather icons and giving temperature expectations.
'People have had an anticipatory attitude (for the new devices),' Rose said. 'People really want more information about their weather. It`s about putting the information exactly in the right place, in a golf bag for golfing conditions or a surfboard that knows waves.'
But this is just two of many products however, which includes the 5-Day Weather Forecaster, Executive Dashboard, Weather Beacon and the Ambient Orb.
In particular, the Executive Dashboard, the Weather Beacon and Ambient Orb offer more than just weather forecasts but give individuals the ability to track any dynamic Internet-based information whether it is stocks or energy prices.
And the last two changes color depending on the information on the Ambient channels ranging from S&P 500, NASDAQ Composite, pollen count, traffic congestions, presidential approval and even gardening, golfing or sailing conditions.
In particular, the weather colors correspond with the standard color-spectrum used on weather maps used by the Weather Channel among others the paging networks.
'Consumer attitudes to convergent devices are dreadful,' he said. 'The average person is not using their phone for sports scores or watching videos, instead we`re looking for devices that don`t complicate our lives.'
He added, 'People would rather have 100 devices that do one thing good, than a cell phone that does 100 things.'
