Do you think Paging is obsolete? It is a common misconception that paging technology has been superseded by newer and better means of wireless communication. This is far from the truth. Jim Nelson, President & CEO of Prism-IPX Systems, has written an excellent paper explaining why paging continues to be the right choice for critical messaging.

Here is an English PDF edit of this paper formatted with page breaks and suitable for printing.

With the help of Angelo Saccoccia and his team at Swissphone we now have this great report on the health and wellbeing of Paging available in French and German. Let's work together to get this important message circulated to a wider audience. Dr. Dietmar Gollnick and his staff at e*Message in Berlin have contributed some minor but valuable revisions to the German translation.

Recommended wireless products and services can be located by clicking on the PRODUCTS button above. Come on in and browse around. There are over 10,000 files on this site. The Wireless Messaging News

A new issue of the Wireless Messaging News gets posted on the web each week. A notification goes out by e-mail to subscribers on most Fridays around noon central-US time. The notification message has a link to the newsletter on the Internet.

There is no charge for subscription and there are no membership restrictions. The newsletter is supported by advertising. Readers are a very select group of wireless industry professionals, and include the senior managers of many of the world's major paging and wireless data companies. There is an even mix of operations managers, marketing people, and engineers, so I try to include items of interest to all three groups.

This newsletter is independent of any trade association.

Suppose someone in Venice wants to send a message from the lower left of the imaginary map to someone on the upper right. He could write the message on a piece of paper, put it into a wine bottle, write “to” and “from” addresses on the bottle, cork it, and throw it into a canal. So . . . then bottle floats down a canal. At each canal intersection there is a man in a gondola who is called a “router.” He sees the bottle and reads the destination (“to”) address and looks to see which canals are open. There may be some canals that are blocked due to a gondola traffic jam or other problem. The router then throws the bottle into an open canal . . . and so on . . . as it gets handled by each router at each intersection, until the bottle with the message inside gets to its destination. The bottle may not travel by the most direct route but it always gets to its destination due to the multiple possibilities — and, of course, the error checking that is built into the protocol.

Passive Audio Amps For Smart Phones

These are acoustic amplifiers for smartphones. They don't need electric power to operate and there are no moving parts. They work like a megaphone (speaking-trumpet, bullhorn, or loudhailer). Everyone that I have shown one to has said something like “Wow, I want one of those!” So I have built a few of them.

Of course there are more “Hi-Fi” ways to listen to audio on your smartphone but who would want to plug an elegant smartphone into some cheap, plastic gadget? Or even use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, which are a pain in the neck to set up, even on a smartphone.

These have been made with hardwood bases and some of them are exotic hardwoods with interesting grain patterns. The horns are polished brass — made from mostly old horns that had rubber bulbs on the ends and were used in “times gone by” by taxis and even clowns in circuses. These horns have been re-purposed, reshaped, soldered, and polished.

The horns are now on display and for sale at:

Franktown, Colorado 80116

The two large horns — the trombone and the gramophone — are difficult to pack and ship to they are for local pickup only. The remainder can be sent to you. I have the cowboy horn and the rest are in stock at the Colorado coffee shop.

Please call for pricing and availability or stop in for a demo and a great cup of espresso.

A CONSULTING ALLIANCE

Brad Dye, Ron Mercer, Allan Angus, Vic Jackson, and Ira Wiesenfeld are friends and colleagues who work both together and independently, on wireline and wireless communications projects. Click here left arrow for a summary of their qualifications and experience. Each one has unique abilities. We would be happy to help you with a project, and maybe save you some time and money.

Note: We do not like Patent Trolls, i.e . “a person or company who enforces patent rights against accused infringers in an attempt to collect licensing fees, but does not manufacture products or supply services based upon the patents in question.” We have helped some prominent law firms defend their clients against this annoyance, and would be happy to do some more of this same kind of work.

brad dye I work in the radio paging industry. Some of the information included on these pages is personal — about my hobbies and family for example — and some of it is professional. A lot of it is made up of papers about Radio Paging that I wrote several years ago while working for Motorola. I add new information about once a week and occasionally throw away things that are no longer of interest. All of the information here is in the public domain and you are free to use it as you wish. Of course, neither I, nor my former employers, accept any responsibility for its accuracy. I can't guarantee that you will become rich and famous if you follow my advice—some do and some don't. The ideas and opinions expressed here are my own, except for those papers obviously written by others. This site is a community effort.

I am involved in promoting the worldwide use of pagers, both one-way and two-way, and paging on the Internet, so if you would like to share any ideas you have about new and innovative applications, please send them to me. I am very sorry, but due to the large volume of e-mail that I receive, I cannot respond to all the requests for more information on paging. I get a lot of very interesting messages, especially from students from all over the world. Several have asked for help in writing papers at school. As much as I would like to, time just doesn't permit. Thank you for visiting my web site.

RECOMMENDED
PRODUCTS
AND SERVICES

Do you have a product or service that you would like to promote on this web site?

If you have any wireless equipment that you would like to buy or sell, please let me know. I don't charge individuals for listing something for sale. If a sale is made through this newsletter, I ask the seller to send me a 10% commission, much the same as the voluntary payments that are requested on the Internet for shareware. There is no cost to the buyer.

There is a charge for companies wanting to put their products in the newsletter and on my web site. There is no obligation for payment of a commission for this kind of basic advertising.

In summary, there are two ways that you can pay for advertising something for sale:

  1. Pay for a six-month ad according to its size, and pay in advance. Options are here .
  2. Pay a 10% commission for items you sell through the newsletter, after you get paid, and on the honor system.
