Dear Friends of Wireless Messaging,

Thanks again to the many Paging Service Providers for sending in their contact information to be included in the new Directory. You can check it out by clicking on the button above. I hope everyone will check the listings for accuracy. Some are missing important content, and I am sure that several will require corrections.

I copied the SouthernNet list of Paging Carriers from their web site and included it in the Directory, but it had several non-functioning links (that I removed) so I suspect it hasn't been updated for a while. I hope someone from SouthernNet will take the time to check their portion of the Directory for accuracy. We especially need more contact-e-mail addresses and home page links when they are available.

The Directory is growing into a valuable asset for finding Paging Service Providers. I think this is the only one available. It is a Paging Community project made possible by submissions from readers.

I just received word that Homer Harris, one the pioneers of US paging, died recently after an extended illness. He was Arlene Harris' father; she is married to Marty Cooper—they are two well-known wireless luminaries. In fact, Marty is “the father” of the cell phone.

New Wireless History Foundation Gains Industry-wide Momentum

Announces Details of Cellular 25th Anniversary Celebration Oct. 13 in Chicago. PCIA, Rural Cellular Association, and Top Wireless Executives Provide Support.

HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO, July 31, 2008-Leaders in the wireless telecommunications industry today announced formation of the Wireless History Foundation (WHF), industry-wide support for the new non-profit group, and further details regarding a celebration launching the organization. The Foundation, designed to preserve and promote the rich history of wireless, will hold its kickoff event Oct. 13 at the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago. The date marks the 25th anniversary of the start of cellular communications.

Begun as a grassroots wireless history initiative, the Wireless History Foundation and its Cellular 25 event have gained support from trade associations and luminaries from across the industry. Today, WHF announced new sponsorship from PCIA-The Wireless Infrastructure Association (PCIA) and the Rural Cellular Association. These two trade groups join CTIA-The Wireless Industry Association® as association sponsors. Discussions with several other industry groups are underway.

"Wireless entrepreneurs and innovators made this industry great. We owe it to future generations to capture in a dedicated repository the important events and contributions these pioneers have made over the past several decades," said Arlene Harris, Founder, Jitterbug, and WHF President. Virgin Mobile loses 111,273 customers in Q2

The struggling U.S. economy continues to plague Virgin Mobile USA. The prepaid MVNO lost 111,273 customers in the second quarter for a total customer base of 4.99 million, that's down from 5.1 million at the end of first quarter. The company's net income was also down. In the second quarter it earned $3.5 million, down from $7.1 million in the same period in the previous year. Revenue was down to $317.4 million from 327.6 million. Here are the other key metrics:

CPGA: Cost per gross add was $113.38 up from $100.03 in second quarter 2007. The higher CPGA was related to more marketing and distribution costs. Specifically, Virgin said it had higher retail commissions due to the popularity of the Wild Card handset and the Slash phone.

ARPU: Average revenue per user was $19.32, down from $20.97 in second quarter 2007. The company expects ARPU to improve in the second half of the year as more high-value hybrid customers join the ranks and adoption of the company's "Totally Unlimited" plan for $79.99 increases. Anecdotally, Virgin Mobile CEO Dan Schulman said the Totally Unlimited plan was drawing more interest than expected from customers.

Churn: Churn for the quarter was 5.6 percent, below company estimates and better than the 5.7 percent churn in second quarter 2007.

Employee Monitoring's Murky Waters

The Legality & Ethics Of Surveillance Are Far From Cut & Dried

The commonly held assumption that employers have unfettered access to electronic communications in the workplace has been called into question. In a federal court in California, a judge issued a verdict in June that said it was illegal for an employer to read employees’ personal pager messages.

• Case Law

The case revolved around a member of the police department in Ontario, Calif., using a work-issued pager. After the police officer’s supervisor told his staff that their text messages would not be monitored, the messages were audited. The officer claimed that it was illegal for members of the police bureau’s internal affairs department to read the police officers’ text messages from a pager that a third-party vendor supplied. While some of the messages were not work-related and were even sexually explicit, the appeals court ruled that the police officer had a reasonable expectation of privacy and that the audit of the messages was unlawful.

“Employers, I think, were very complacent in assuming that they could do whatever they wanted as far as workplace monitoring goes,” says Jeremy Gruber, legal director for The National Workrights Institute ( “This case demonstrates that the law is still developing on workplace monitoring. Employers who have programs that are overly broad and invasive could at some point find themselves on the wrong side of the law.”

Gruber continues, “Specifically, this case makes it clear that employers using third-party vendors to administer their monitoring program do not have the same protections that employers who use their own equipment for monitoring do. Also, employers who use third-party vendors can find themselves liable for invasion of privacy if they don’t have proper disclosure and proper notice depending on how they use the systems.”

Indeed, the ruling has challenged the status quo, says Adam Schran, chief executive and founder of Ascentive (, which designs and markets employee monitoring software. “It did come as a total surprise,” Schran says. “The legal situation is in flux, so you have to be in contact with your lawyers or the general counsel of the company to make sure you are doing it in the right way.”

Employee monitoring has entered the realm of legally murky territory. This means qualified legal counsel to guide SMEs about what they can and cannot do has become more important than it was in the past.

The perceived need to monitor employees’ communications has skyrocketed. Since employers first began to fret over how staffers could waste time, the explosion of ways to goof off at work has compounded demand for surveillance tools to keep an eye on workers’ activities. According to Ascentive, employee monitoring, blocking, and filtering product sales have become a $300 million-a-year market since they were first introduced for mainstream applications more than a decade ago.

• Ethical Dilemma

Surveillance of employees’ electronic communications also involves ethical issues admins need to address, even if the monitoring is perfectly legal. Many admins may be uncomfortable with employee monitoring, especially when a company implements a heavy-handed policy and asks admins to use technology to closely monitor what employees write in their e-mail messages or which Web sites they visit.

“I would tell my boss that it’s unethical, in my opinion, to monitor employees if they have not signed an agreement that fully sets their expectations about the monitoring. If the boss wanted to do the monitoring, we could send out a form to all employees that they would all sign and return before any monitoring begins,” says John Matzek, co-chief executive officer of Logic IT Consulting ( “I would also expect the boss and the CEO to sign the form. Employee morale is critical to the success of a business, and covert monitoring could have a huge impact on morale.”

The general public is also becoming more aware of how admins are often privy to the contents of employees’ email and other electronic communications. Analyst firm Cyber-Ark ( recently caused a stir when it revealed that 47% of 300 senior IT professionals surveyed said they had “accessed information that was not relevant to their role.”

“As an administrator, I will often need to fix or maintain the email system,” Matzek says. “I agree to keep client information confidential, but I will often need to log in as a user to troubleshoot their email issues or make sure things are working after maintenance.”

• Policy Matters

General industry-standard guidelines for employee monitoring have not been established; it is up to individual enterprises to set their own policies, while the IT department must determine how it does monitoring.

“Employee monitoring is fairly common in policy but varied in practice,” says Michael Rasmussen, president of Corporate Integrity ( “Most organizations have policies in place to establish that employees should not have an expectation of privacy and that the corporation retains rights to monitor communications. However, the practice is quite varied.”

Still, there are certain policies all enterprises should follow, Rasmussen says. “Organizations that are going to pursue monitoring need to have a policy in place that states that there is no expectation of employee privacy and that the organization reserves the right to monitor communication,” he notes. “Monitoring also has to be done for a legitimate purpose and cannot be done in a way that discriminates against an individual.”

Bosch DP6000 Digital Paging System tailored to meet Leiden University campus' special requirements


The importance of good on-campus security has been highlighted once again by the tragic events at Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, USA, last year, where more than 30 people were killed in a shooting incident, and the recent shooting in DeKalb, near Chicago. These are obviously extreme examples of what can occur, and far more relevant to the everyday situation is the number of medical emergencies and accidents that can occur on campus. In the Netherlands alone, for example, there are around 10,000 medical emergencies per year occurring at the workplace – including heart attacks, drug overdoses and cases of physical injury due to accidents and assaults.

Fast reaction to such emergencies is always the key to saving lives by getting medical, maintenance or security personnel to where they are needed without delay. This requires dependable and uninterrupted communication between all emergency staff, for which an up-to-date digital radio paging system like Bosch’s DP6000 is ideally suited. Even today, no other technology is as reliable and fast as paging for linking people (and equipment) together.

The University of Leiden, the Netherlands, recently undertook a major upgrade of its paging system to enhance security and maintain the highest levels of safety for the large campus population. The university had special requirements, including the need to provide full, reliable coverage over the entire campus, which is more or less scattered over the whole of Leiden. Because of this, the installer Innocom, Bureau voor Bedrijfscommunicatie BV, had no hesitation in recommending Bosch’s DP6000 digital paging system as the best choice.

The DP6000 Digital Paging System not only provides a fast and ultra-reliable communications network, it is also a system that can be easily tailored to meet special requirements like those of the Leiden University campus. “The campus is scattered all over the town and many separate paging systems were being used. Each paging system had its own specifications and only a small number of the buildings were covered, and no centralized calls were possible. But we knew from previous experience with the DP6000 that we could deliver a complete paging system providing total coverage over the whole area,” says Jan Verasdonck, Innocom’s CEO.

The variety of buildings on campus is enormous as it is the oldest university in the Netherlands with a history going back to the 16th century. It consists of nine faculties: Archaeology, Arts, Creative and Performing Arts, Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Theology. It also houses Schools of Management and Education. Today, there are approximately 17,000 students and 4,000 staff members.

Basically, Innocom delivered enough transmitters to cover all the buildings of the university and the techniques to avoid collisions between paging calls. A specially designed switchbox was placed in each of the university buildings from where alarm calls are fed into the central system. These alarms automatically trigger all kinds of paging calls to, for instance, first-aid teams or fire teams to ensure fast and well-organized assistance for every situation in every building. With this system, people anywhere on campus can be reached, as wells as in remote places where other kinds of communication, such as cell phones, do not function.

“We were not able to use copper wiring between the buildings since the university considered this would be difficult to maintain in the future,” says Jan Verasdonck. “Instead, the university wanted us to use its sophisticated new fiber-optic IT network for the paging equipment. This presented us with some challenges since an IT network is not designed to synchronize with VHF or UHF signals. Fortunately, Bosch helped us here with specially designed software to cope with this demand. We also developed IP paging inputs ourselves using existing I/O switches. And, using our own software, we created a fool-proof signaling system from all of the different buildings to the central system. We can connect all kinds of urgent information immediately to the appropriate team of well-trained professionals within the university.”

Innocom started installing the DP6000 system in 2005 with the Kamerlingh Onnes Building. Currently housing the university’s Law faculty, this listed building is named in honor of the celebrated low-temperature physicist, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, who conducted his experiments on liquid helium there and for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1913. In 2006, Innocom completed all the buildings in the old center of Leiden, and in 2007 the installation will be extended to the university’s Leeuwenhoek site. But it won’t end there. After 432 years the university is still very ambitious. Further improvements are constantly being sought and there are plans for new buildings. Jan Verasdonck: “And we are ready for that. We can match up to their plans, and we can easily integrate any expansions in the paging system we have already designed for them.”

Innocom has been working with Bosch paging systems for around 20 years and has always been very satisfied with the support it has received from Bosch. “What we like a lot about Bosch is that the company provides a more or less open system. They really do cooperate in order to give you all the knowledge you need. And we could not have done this job without this kind of support,” says Peter Verdonschot, one of the senior system engineers at Innocom. “Many other paging system manufacturers like to keep things complicated in order to make you more dependent on their products and services after you have installed their system. And that makes it difficult, or even impossible, to meet special demands from customers. But with the open Bosch approach, it’s possible for us to maintain customer satisfaction for a very competitive price level during the many years that a paging system is normally in operation. And that, in the end, is a major benefit for us and our customers.”

Although the installation is not yet complete, the faculty administrators and security services are very satisfied with the result so far. They have responsibility for the safety of 21,000 people and with this system they are able to ensure rapid response to all kinds of emergency situations. And, since the system is privately owned, they don’t have to rely on third-party providers for the continuity of their emergency communications network.

Floridians Urged to Prepare Emergency Communications Plans for Peak Hurricane Months

  • Forward your home phone calls to your wireless number if you will be away from your home or have to evacuate.

"Historically, the busiest months for hurricanes are August and September, so this is a crucial time for residents to make sure they've made essential preparations," Pam Tope, Florida region president for Verizon Wireless. "We're all hoping for a quiet hurricane season, but we still want to make sure we can provide the strongest wireless service if any storms head our way. Residents should also be taking steps to ensure their safety before, during and after storms."

The company also urges the following actions once a storm is on the way:

  • Limit non-emergency calls to conserve battery power and free-up wireless networks for emergency agencies and operations.
  • Send brief TXT messages rather than voice calls for the same reasons as above.
  • Check weather and news reports available on wireless phone applications when commercial power is out.

During the past 18 months, Verizon Wireless has spent more than $250 million in Florida to strengthen and enhance its wireless network. Highlights of these enhancements include:

  • A comprehensive emergency response plan, including preparing emergency command centers across Florida in the case of a storm or other crisis.
  • A $20 million enhancement to its Tampa Bay switching facility, which doubled its traffic capacity and back-up power redundancies. The facility is designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and will serve as the region's emergency operations center in the event of a storm or other disaster.
  • A new 35-foot $150,000 Disaster Response Trailer to be used as temporary customer service location in areas impacted by a disaster.
  • Erecting about 150 new digital cell sites since the start of last year, of which about 85 percent have their own on-site generators.
  • The company also has a fleet of dozens of Cells on Wheels (COWS) and Cells on Light Trucks (COLTS), and generators on trailers (GOaTS) that can be rolled into hard-hit locations or areas that need extra network capacity.
  • Pre-arranging fuel delivery to mobile units and generators to keep the network operating at full strength even if power is lost for an extended period of time.
  • The company has expanded its EV-DO wireless broadband network, including launching its highest-speed Rev. A network throughout the state. This allows the most advanced wireless services (downloads, location-based applications, video messaging, etc.) and makes the network more robust for usage by residents and emergency agencies.

While Florida has been spared during the early part of this year's hurricane season, these kinds of intensive investments and preparations proved critical during the height of extraordinary storm seasons in the late summer and early autumn of 2004 and 2005. In those years, the Verizon Wireless network in Florida remained strong, while many other wireless communication networks struggled to serve residents and emergency response officials.

Put that thing down! Staten Islanders admit they're addicted to PDAs

Valerie Lopiano, of Bulls Head, is one of many Staten Islanders who are dependent on their BlackBerry device ... even when they're on vacation.

It was a lazy summer night and Andy Pollard of Rossville was just returning home from a long day at his job in Manhattan. He sat down at the dinner table to enjoy four savory Thai cuisine dishes with his family and to discuss everyone's day. As dinner continued, Pollard's wife noticed that he had been silent the whole time. She looked in his direction and was appalled to see his attention focused on the newest addition to his life — his BlackBerry.

For many Staten Islanders, summer vacations and languid evenings still don't equal a break from their compulsive need to check their BlackBerry devices, and similar gadgets such as the iPhone that give them access to email, the Web and on their cellphones. The pocket-size devices which brings the world to ones fingertips has users constantly yearning for another glance to see what's new at work. Valerie Lopiano, a sales agent at Scott Dobrin Real Estate, admits to being addicted to her BlackBerry, regardless of whether she's actually working.

Which means, like many BlackBerry users, she's always working.

"I check it continuously, about three to four times an hour," said the Bulls Head resident. "If I go on vacation, it has to come with me. It's the only way."

Launched in 1997 as a two-way pager, the BlackBerry evolved into a hand-held device which now supports e-mail services, mobile telephone, text messaging and Web browsing. Now with 9 million users throughout North America, more Americans are finding it difficult to stay focused on anything other than the device. Pollard, a senior computer technician for Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP in Manhattan, said he receives endless amounts of e-mails on his BlackBerry each day.

I get e-mails like crazy, said Pollard, who estimates that he checks his BlackBerry between 20 to 30 times a day. But in the business field, using the BlackBerry is the fastest way of communicating with someone.

Mrs. Lopiano agrees. Though she only recently began using a BlackBerry for her sales agent job, she said the device has improved her business. Now she can instantly look up housing property details for her customers on the phones web browser application. It has benefited my job because I don't have to wait anymore to communicate with buyers, she said.

That's the positive side.

On the down side, these portable gadgets can creates a strain on family life.

Cilia Baez of Port Richmond, a manager at beauty retailer Sephora in Manhattan, said her children and her boy friend hate when she uses her BlackBerry.

"My kids always ask me why I am on the phone again, and my boy friend asks me if I can turn my phone off when I'm with him," said Ms. Cilia.

Request denied.

She said she does not regret having a BlackBerry because it helps her stay connected with her colleagues.

Frank DeSantis of Annadale said that while his family also gets upset with his excessive BlackBerry use, they understand that it is part of his job. Though he tries to limit his use on vacations, he still has to check it at least three times a day or whenever he has family down-time.

In today's fast-moving world, the BlackBerry keeps you updated as things are happening, said DeSantis. It keeps you in touch with your business and short quick e-mails are what I prefer.

DeSantis is not alone. According to AOL Mails fourth annual E-mail Addiction Survey, 46 percent of e-mail users said they're hooked on e-mail and 28 percent said they feel obligated to check their work e-mail on vacation. Worse, 19 percent choose vacation destinations based on the availability of e-mail access.

The survey also found that New York ranks No. 1 on a list of the 10 most e-mail addicted cities in the country, followed by Houston, Chicago and Detroit.

But is the addiction to checking e-mail really necessary for workers to stay connected to their jobs? Is receiving e-mails such an urgent matter that it has to be heeded to 25 times a day? According to Staten Island psychologist Dr. Larry Arann, the answer is no.

"There are some people that will say BlackBerries are indispensable because it gives them a sense of importance such as constant contact, but I just think its needless, its a distraction and it is more of a fad," he said.

Staten Island business workers however, see the BlackBerry and other devices such as the Sidekick, Treo and iPhone, as more of a necessity than a fad. In the business field, having a BlackBerry is a must, said Pollard. Checking your email is now part of your daily routine and it is expected from the company you work for.

Sanjay Jha’s sense of urgency

The initial question on many minds when news broke last week that Sanjay Jha, COO at Qualcomm Inc., would help lead Motorola Inc. out of the woods: Why swap celebrated success for plying the trackless wilderness?

Last week, Jha himself essentially cited the challenge and paid homage to Motorola’s reputation for engineering prowess.

Others pointed out that Qualcomm is basically a family-owned business and that Jha, as COO at age 45, may have gone as far as possible under CEO Paul Jacobs. Jacobs, also 45, presumably has decades at the helm ahead of him.

At Motorola, Jha has the opportunity to lead. (Jha officially is co-CEO, along with co-CEO Greg Brown, of the entire company and will take charge of the handset division, once Motorola’s bread-and-butter.)

Jha’s point is well-taken by analyst Matt Thornton at Avian Securities L.L.C.

“Sanjay’s caliber speaks to the caliber of the opportunity,” Thornton said.

Oh, and there’s the question of compensation:

The value of Jha’s reward was estimated at up to $94 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. That’s based on $3.6 million in salary and bonuses this year, plus restricted stock and options worth up to $90 million. (The WSJ cited compensation expert David Schmidt at James F. Reda & Associates.)

The WSJ’s Mean Street columnist, Evan Newmark, calculated that Motorola’s promise to Jha of a 3% equity stake in a spun-off handset division could be worth up to $500 million at some point, and noted that the company would pay him $30 million if it doesn't fly solo.

Jha pointed out that the bulk of his compensation’s actual value rested on increasing shareholder value — i.e., he would be paid for performance.

Many analysts acknowledged their initial surprise that Motorola had landed such a prestigious catch, but Wall Street suddenly saw Motorola’s once half-empty cup as half-full and sent the stock up 12% last week. Within the wireless industry, there was a palpable sense of relief, too, that Motorola’s new leader was a known personality who had earned the affection, as well as the respect, of those around him.

So much for Jha’s motivation.

Looking ahead

Now for his to-do list.

Analysts appear to agree that if anyone can produce a turnaround, Jha has the technical prowess to do it. But the mobile-phone business is built on a complex matrix of various elements, of which technology is one. Another critical element, as Jha acknowledged last week, is the consumer-facing design and marketing work.

Which features, on which platforms, wrapped in which form factors, at which price points will fly in which market segments?

“This will be an enormous challenge,” said Avi Greengart, analyst at Current Analysis. “Motorola’s physical designs haven’t been the problem. Even today its products are physically attractive. The user interface and underlying software, however, is where Motorola needs help.”

“This is an area, for instance, where Apple has a tremendous advantage,” Greengart added. “Steve Jobs understands very well what his set of customers want. That’s as much art as science. Data helps, but consumers don’t always know what they want until you show it to them.”

Favorable metrics

Some of Motorola’s financial and market metrics have stabilized, leading Strategy Analytics to ask rhetorically whether the company’s second-quarter numbers were “signs of an L-shaped recovery”? A few points:

  • Motorola’s shipments of more than 28 million handsets in the quarter, though down 21% from the year-ago quarter, reflected the slowest rate of decline since the first quarter of last year;
  • revenue, down 22% from the year-ago quarter, showed a sequential improvement;
  • operating margins for the quarter, at negative 10%, represented a sequential improvement;
  • average selling prices stabilized, down only 1% over the year-ago quarter — a period in which Nokia Corp.’s ASPs showed an 8% annual decline — reflecting an improved mix of new products and healthier retail prices;
  • that product mix relies less on Razr and more on follow-on products; Razr and Razr2 accounted for 31% of shipments in Q4 2007, but only 15% in Q1 2008.

“I’m making a call here,” said Bonny Joy, analyst at Strategy Analytics. “Motorola’s numbers are coming in at a point where Motorola has bottomed out. It’s for Sanjay (Jha) to build from here. He will not have to work at preventing a further slide.”

That Jha has declared Motorola’s portfolio will be 50% 3G going forward — up from 15% today — also lends credence to the potential for a turnaround to build in coming quarters, Joy said.

Competitively, Jha brings a unique perspective, according to Joy. His perch at Qualcomm gave him visibility into how Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and LG Electronics Co. Ltd. addressed their 3G rollouts by literally flying large teams of engineers at great expense to their carrier customers’ locations to smooth customization efforts and launches. That technique had helped Samsung and LG effectively challenge Motorola’s position and can help Motorola fight back, the analyst said.

Going forward

Not everyone, of course, is ready to declare that Motorola has hit and escaped a trough.

“Calling it a trough might be going too far,” said Thornton at Avian Securities. “We’re seeing stabilization.”

Motorola executed well in a tough environment in the second quarter, the analyst said. The company’s balance sheet and cash flow improved. But “of course you want to see multiple data points,” he said.

“Now, they have a capable leader and it’s an execution game,” Thornton said.

The metrics Thornton will watch going forward are the traditional financial and market metrics: improved profitability (margins), cost management, the crucial product roadmap and market share in various regions. That also applies to the company’s remaining two businesses — the home and networks mobility unit and the enterprise mobility unit.

To spin, or not to spin?

“I think they’re intent on spinning off the handset division,” Thornton said. “Sanjay wants to lead a public company and his compensation is geared towards rewarding a spin-off.”

But the company’s effort to determine the costs and benefits of a spin-off will play a role, the analyst said. The potential upside must outweigh the complexities and one-time costs of allocating capital, debt, facilities and personnel between the core company and the newly fledged handset company.

Time is of the essence.

Jha’s “sense of urgency” can galvanize the remaining Motorola team and help attract new talent, according to Joy.

And Motorola’s promise to roll out 34 new models in the second half of the year is proof the pipeline isn’t empty — a critical element to near-term recovery, Thornton agreed.

“They’re going to live or die over the next 18 months over what’s already in the pipeline,” Greengart said. “I assume that Motorola’s cupboard isn’t entirely bare.”

How will teenagers reshape the wireless landscape?
Findings presented at CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment 2008, September 10-12 in San Francisco

Sprint planning to reduce wireless modem data rates?

When a struggling company does something right, you have to reward them for it. Otherwise, what was the point of criticizing their previously unacceptable business practices?

Sprint, in this case, has been rumored to be making another change in their push to redefine themselves as the premier wireless data provider in the US. Rather than aiming at the more competitive voice-call business in the US, Sprint has been banking on their more widely-available EVDO Rev. A data network and upcoming WiMAX data service to revive their ailing bottom line. Sprint’s WiMAX aspirations are still on the ropes as various wireless carriers and associations are petitioning the FCC to block, or at least delay, the Sprint and Clearwire merger that would bear the WiMAX-fruit that we’re all waiting for.

But, that doesn't mean Sprint can’t make bigger changes in their other wireless data service. Sprint’s phone-as-modem plans (PAM) allow the user to use their mobile phones as, well, modems. Previously priced at $40 per month, the PAM plans are now rumored to be getting a huge price-cut. We’re hearing that Sprint is mulling a $15 per month price-point for customers looking to use their cellphones as wireless modems (tethered to their laptops, of course).

The move would most likely help Sprint increase their revenue, but may not necessarily increase their data ARPU (average revenue per user). While, ARPU is generally regarded as the key metric by which a wireless carrier is able to turn a profit, there’s something to be said for increasing your customer base on the same ARPU, as opposed to reducing ARPU while holding subscriber numbers constant.

Sprint would do well to drop their PAM plans. Sprint customers would be more willing to adopt the cellphone as wireless modem data plans, rather than violating Sprint’s Terms of Service by tethering their smartphone, with regular data plans, to their laptops. And, by increasing their appeal to heavy data users, Sprint could be one step closer to becoming the No. 1 wireless data provider in the US.

Note: I’ve said it time after time that Sprint would do well to redefine their business in to a more data-centric model, but that doesn't mean Sprint’s voice-call business can being ignored. Data is more lucrative, and Sprint has the edge there, but voice is still king, and Sprint needs to improve that side of the business if they want to rise up past their No. 3 post.

Six months to digital switch and many consumers have yet to comply

Retailers say supplies will likely run low as digital broadcasting date nears.

Though there’s about six months remaining before television broadcasts switch solely to digital, some retailers say they’re already running low on supplies and consumers who are part of the nearly 13 million waiting for the final days to swap out their rabbit ears may be left seeing static.

At area Radio Shacks, manager Juan Escobar said customers looking for the converter box — which can be purchased with government coupons totaling around $40 — currently have to place an order because the in-store supply has been selling out nearly as fast as it comes in since demand started escalating in July.

Still, while some have been driven to stores to get ready for the shift, Nielsen Media Research reports show about 10 percent of all TV-watching households are unprepared and would have had no access to channels if the digital transition occurred a few months ago.

Unfortunately, Escobar said, by the time analog television signals are discontinued on Feb. 17, 2009, many manufacturers will be unable to keep up with the demand for converter boxes needed by those who either didn’t know about the change or simply choose to wait.

RIM hits 10 percent U.S. market share record

NEW YORK (Reuters) - For the first time Research In Motion Ltd's BlackBerry cornered 10 percent of U.S. cell phone sales in the second quarter in a market that grew more than 5 percent despite economic concerns, Strategy Analytics said on Monday.

The research firm said Canada's RIM was seeing huge success with both consumer and enterprise handsets in the United states where total mobile phone shipments rose 5.3 percent to 41.9 million units from 39.8 million in the second quarter of 2007.

Also in the second quarter Motorola Inc. managed to keep the lead in its home market.

While some analysts have been expecting Motorola to be overtaken by rivals even in its strongest market the phone maker had better-than-expected U.S. sales in the quarter, giving it 25.8 percent of the U.S. market compared with its global share of less than 10 percent.

Motorola barely squeaked ahead of LG Electronics to keep its global No. 3 ranking in the second quarter. It has been losing market share to rivals such as Nokia and Samsung Electronics Co. for well over a year amid criticism of its handset line-up and a lack of phones with high-speed Web links.

"Motorola is not yet out of the woods, but these are encouraging, early signs of stabilization," said Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston, citing the company's strong distribution network and its U.S. carrier relationships.

Strategy Analytics said LG took second place in the United States for the first time in almost two years, due partly to sales of phones with high-speed Web links by the country's No. 1 wireless service AT&T Inc.

Nighthawk Systems Reports Second Quarter Results

2008 Revenues Almost Triple 2007 Totals — Company Implements Cost Reduction Initiative

SAN ANTONIO, TX – August 14, 2008 - Nighthawk Systems, Inc. (OTC BB: NIHK) (“Nighthawk”), a leading provider of wireless and IP-based control devices and solutions, today reported financial results for three and six months ended June 30, 2008. Revenues continued to grow as compared to previous years and the Company implemented initiatives to lower the production costs of both its set top box and power control products which it feels will allow it to generate positive cash flows and income from operations.

The Company reported revenues for the second quarter of $736,356, a 117% increase over the second quarter of 2007 revenue of $339,684 and reported revenues for the six months ended June 30, 2008 of approximately $1.6 million, a 183% increase over revenues for the six months ended June 30, 2007 of approximately $552,000. These increases could have been substantially larger, as the Company shifted the production of 3,911 set top box units from the second quarter to the third quarter of 2008 in order to implement cost savings reductions in the production of set top boxes.  As a result, the Company expects a significant increase in revenues, margins and cash flows associated with the production of set top boxes beginning in the third quarter of 2008 and continuing for the foreseeable future.  

Despite the shift in production of set top boxes to the third quarter of 2008, overall revenues still more than doubled from the second quarter of 2007 to the second quarter of 2008, and nearly tripled from the first six months of 2007 to the first six months of 2008.  The Company experienced significant growth in its general power control products as it completed the remaining 410 units from an order of 600 power control units by a provider of photo traffic and electronic toll enforcement services. Sales of the Company’s utility products decreased slightly as the Company began marketing new utility products capable of 2-way communications capabilities and additional functionality. The Company expects to begin producing these products during the third or fourth quarter of this year.

Due to the increase in overall revenues generated, the Company produced approximately twice the gross profit in the three and six-month periods ending in 2008 than in the comparable periods in 2007. Gross margins declined from 2007 to 2008 due to the addition of previously lower margin set top box revenues to the overall product mix, but as mentioned previously, going forward the Company expects margins on set top boxes to improve significantly and more closely match those of its traditional power control products.  Selling, general and administrative expenses declined slightly from the 2007 periods to the 2008 periods.

Improvements in gross profit were offset by increases in depreciation and amortization expense recognized during 2008 related to the acquisition of the set top box business in October 2007.  As a result, and also as a result of the recognition of approximately $200,000 in non-cash interest expense associated with the early payoff of debt during the second quarter of 2008, the net loss increased from $592,651 during the second quarter of 2007 to $732,110 during the second quarter of 2008.  However, the net loss for the six months periods improved from $1,709,953 in 2007 to $1,502,308 in 2008.  

“As the latter half of 2008 unfolds, we believe that many of the initiatives identified and in some cases, achieved during the first six months of the year, will have a significant positive impact on our financial results going forward. We were successful in finding alternative cost structures for the set top box product and this should accelerate the improvement not only to the Company’s top line going forward, but to the bottom line and to cash flows as well,” commented H. Douglas Saathoff, CEO of Nighthawk Systems, Inc.  Mr. Saathoff, added, “The commitment we made during the second quarter of this year slowed down the production, and therefore the revenue growth, that I expected to realize during the quarter and as a result, the Company will not reach some of the revenue targets that I anticipated we would reach during 2008.  However, I feel the changes provide the Company with a much more realistic opportunity to achieve profitable near term growth earlier than expected.”

Public Emergency Notification & Volunteer Alerting

The EA1 is the solution for remotely activating public warning signage. Examples include tornado sirens, flash flood warnings, fire danger, Amber Alert, icy roads, etc. The EA1 can also send text messages to scrolling signs. This can occur in conjunction with the activation of audible alarms and visual strobes. This is ideal for public notification in buildings, schools, hotels, factories, etc. The group call feature allows for any number of signs or flashing lights to be activated at the same time over a wide geographic area. In addition, the EA1 Emergency Alert is the perfect solution for low cost yet highly effective alerting of volunteer fire fighters in their home. When activated the EA1 will emit an audible alarm and activate the power outlet on the units faceplate. A common setup is to simply place the EA1 on a table and plug a lamp into the faceplate. When paged from dispatch or any touch tone phone the EA1 will awaken the fire fighter to a lit room. As an option the EA1 can be ordered with a serial cable, allowing for attachment of a serial printer. When paged the alphanumeric message will be printed out at the same time the alarm sounds and the outlet is activated. The EA1 is an ideal complement to alphanumeric belt pagers common to volunteers.

Firehouse Automation

The FAS-8 is designed for activating one or more relays in a firehouse and if desired, printing the alphanumeric message to a serial printer. For this application the FAS-8 is set to activate upon receiving the proper paging cap code sent from 911 dispatch. Up to eight different devices can be activated all with individual time functions. The most common devices to turn on include the PA amplifier, audible wake up alarm, and house lights. The most common device turned off is the stove. The FAS-8 can accept up to 8 different cap codes and have separate relay and time functions per cap code. This allows for different alerting to be accomplished at the same physical location depending upon which cap code is sent. This can be very helpful when fire crews and medical crews are housed in the same building.
