Dear Friends of Wireless Messaging,

The Newsletter Needs Your Support.

Here in the USA some of our Radio and Television content is awful. I guess they appeal to the lowest common denominator. However, really good programming is available over our National Public Radio stations, and PBS Television. Both of these services rely on contributions as their largest single source of financial support. You probably already see where I am going with this.

This newsletter is supported by individual contributions, the generous support of our advertisers, and the courtesy of iland Internet Solutions Corporation.

I made a direct appeal this week to some of our supporters and advertisers. I am humbled by the response. It has been very good. We have some new advertising and some of the individual contributions have been more than the corporate support. This is amazing.

The AAPC and this newsletter are dedicated to representing and advancing the paging industry. This has become a community forum where opinions can be freely expressed, and where ideas are shared to help re-vitalize our businesses.

In the past there have been strong attempts to squelch or censor the free exchange of opinions expressed here. Not just mine, but the opinions of readers as well. I have always refused to publish unsigned comments, but I do protect the anonymity of those who request it. There have been several situations where comments posted here could have caused the writer to lose his or her job. I am sensitive to this. I know of at least one carrier that has blocked my web site and my e-mail address from their servers so that their employees cannot read what you are reading now. I think this is wrong. It has cost me dearly in financial support, but like I have said frequently, “my (consulting) time is for sale, but my opinions are not.”

Do you want “managed news” or do you want me to tell it like it is? Or at least as I see it? I think I know your answer.

Newspapers generally cost 75¢ a copy and they hardly ever mention paging. If you receive some benefit from this publication maybe you would like to help support it financially? A donation of $25.00 would represent approximately 50¢ a copy for one year. If you are willing and able, please click on the PayPal Donate button on your right.

Leavitt Communications is back.

phil leavitt Phil Leavitt has been a mover and a shaker in the Paging and Radio Communications businesses for a long time. He has renewed his advertisement for Alphamates in this issue of the newsletter. In addition to several models of Alphamates, he also has about 100 new Motorola 900 MHz POCSAG CreataLink units, as well as 200-300 Motorola 900 MHz POCSAG DataLink boards. These are getting difficult to find and are very useful for telemetry projects. Check out his ad below.

Supporting our advertisers helps to keep this newsletter going. In other words, please buy some Alphamates for sending alphanumeric-text messages to pagers, from Leavitt Communications. Thank you.

NOTIFYall is also back as an advertiser.

Their Group Text Messaging Service delivers your text message to an unlimited number of cell phones, pagers, PDAs, or e-mail on any service, anywhere, anytime! Their ad follows.

CVC Paging is also back.

Actually they didn't intend to be absent. Their renewal got mailed to an old address. CVC owns and operates two separate earth stations and specializes in uplink services for paging carriers. Their ad follows.

A new issue of The Wireless Messaging Newsletter gets posted on the web each week. A notification goes out by e-mail to subscribers on most Fridays around noon central US time. The notification message has a link to the actual newsletter on the Internet. That way it doesn't fill up your incoming e-mail account.

There is no charge for subscription and there are no membership restrictions. Readers are a very select group of wireless industry professionals, and include the senior managers of many of the world's major Paging and Wireless Data companies. There is an even mix of operations managers, marketing people, and engineers — so I try to include items of interest to all three groups. It's all about staying up-to-date with business trends and technology. I regularly get readers' comments, so this newsletter has become a community forum for the Paging, and Wireless Data communities. You are welcome to contribute your ideas and opinions. Unless otherwise requested, all correspondence addressed to me is subject to publication in the newsletter and on my web site. I am very careful to protect the anonymity of those who request it.

Remembering Jake

steven jacoby
Steven D. Jacoby

September 11th marked the nine-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Steven D. Jacoby was on American Airlines Flight 77 a Boeing 757 en route from Dulles Airport near Washington DC to Los Angeles. The plane was carrying 58 passengers, four flight attendants and two pilots. It crashed into the Pentagon about 9:45 a.m. ET on 9/11/01. Jacoby was en route from Washington DC to participate in the Personal Communication Industry Association (PCIA) conference and exhibition in Los Angeles, which was canceled because of the loss of life and destruction associated with the attacks on the Pentagon and the New York World Trade Center. “Jake”, as we knew him, was the COO at Metrocall Paging for seven years. At Metrocall he was a respected leader and loved by all. Jake was also involved with numerous charities. He was only 43 years old. We’ll never forget you Jake.

(Information for this piece was contributed by several friends and colleagues of Steven Jacoby.)

People Spending More Time On Facebook Than Any Other Site

And that includes YouTube

Sep 10 2010, 7:23am CDT
by Jordan Cressman
I4U News

facebook logo Facebook has now officially become the website that online users spend the most time on, eclipsing all of Google's sites like Gmail and Youtube as the latest online metric that Facebook is now leading in.

In the US, a total of 41.1 million minutes were logged on Facebook in August. That's 685,000 hours. That number represents nearly 10% of all online hours logged that month. Google took in about 9.6% of those precious online minutes.

That's pretty amazing, considering that Gmail owns some of the most time-consuming properties online, like Gmail, Youtube, and of course the core Google.com search engine. All of those services combined didn't even beat Facebook which only owns one domain, Facebook.com.

Following Google was Yahoo, eating up 9.1% of online users' time. Further sites carried much lower market shares.

It is a huge coup for Facebook, which just one year ago was only generating about 5% of online time while Google was exploding at 12%.

This is all based on the latest data from online tracking firm Comscore. Facebook has also previously toppled Google in metrics that counted total user visits and origination of linked news content. This is obviously why Google is trying to break into the social networking game. So far, it hasn't been able to budge the tight choke-hold Facebook has on that crowd.

MCTEL and One2Many collaborate to offer Cell Broadcast solution

13 SEPTEMBER 2010

MCTEL, a messaging and device management specialist, and one2many, a cell broadcast company, announced they have formed a partnership to provide the latest generation of Cell Broadcast solutions, able to broadcast messages to all devices irrespective of whether they are set to display CB messages.

Cell broadcast (CB) technology is said to offer a non-intrusive, real-time service of distributing text messages and binary content to mobile handsets, specific to their current location. CB is capable of broadcasting one single message to reach all mobile handsets in an area as small as one radio cell and as big as an entire country. Sending a message to millions of handsets takes a matter of seconds, it is claimed.

Traditionally Cell Broadcast messages are received by handsets which have CB activated and configured correctly. As configuration settings need to be performed on the handset rather than the SIM, manual intervention is required. For mobile users, manual configuration may not be intuitive acting as a barrier to activation. MCTEL’s device and SIM management specialisation provides an altogether more rewarding user experience and increases the penetration of the service overcoming this barrier.

Based on an in-depth knowledge of mobile handset behaviour, the MCTEL solution identifies handsets with the CB capability not activated as well as handsets that do not support CB messages. In the first case, MCTEL SIM OTA remotely manages the SIM card to activate the appropriate parameter, even on 3G mobile handsets that represent a growing part of today’s mobile fleet. In the second case, the CB message is replaced by a SMS that is sent to the handsets that do not support CB messages. As a result, one2many Cell Broadcast Centre combined with MCTEL SIM management solution is said to significantly increase the coverage rate of cell broadcast campaigns.

“By adding our device & SIM management to one2many’s cell broadcast technology, we entered a new phase of development for CB.” explains Dr Daniel Mavrakis, MCTEL CEO. “The solution enables operator settings control and ease of configuration. In addition we are now able to deliver CB campaigns to all the handsets attached to one or more cells on the network and even to those that do not support CB! This major improvement underlies further developments of cell broadcast services and the monetization of these services.”

With immediate and widespread message broadcasting, CB technology is said to be especially sought after for time-sensitive location-based services. Governments increasingly use CB for emergency alerts, whether they are related to natural hazards or security threats. In such cases, it is a vital necessity to instantly reach all mobile users located in a given area. For mobile operators, CB is claimed to represent a unique opportunity to locally optimize the capacity utilization rate and to launch new revenue-generating services.

Enabling Cell Broadcast is key to the success of solutions such as Public Warning and Dynamic Billing. Collectively, One2Many and MCTEL are addressing the needs of solution providers and customers in this area and building on this expertise to provide more interactive services by cross-pollinating different message domains like Cell Broadcast and SMS, or USSD.

Maarten Mes, Managing Director of one2many commented: “We are excited that MCTEL has joined one2many’s Technology Partnership program. This program fosters and supports bilateral research projects which have the potential for commercialization of CB services. MCTEL has addressed and found a solution for cell broadcast device & SIM management, supporting operators to maximise revenue from cell Broadcast commercial services”

The commercialization of MCTEL’s Cell Broadcast Versatile Delivery will be jointly done by both companies. Several mobile operators are already said to be interested in testing the solution on their network and perceive high revenue potential in this technology.

Motorola's Android Tablet Coming Next Year?

Liane Cassavoy, PC World
Sep 16, 2010 3:35 pm

jha
Sanjay Jha [Photo courtesy of http://erictric.com/]

The burgeoning tablet market is about to get even more crowded, as Motorola on Thursday confirmed that it, too, plans to offer a tablet computer in the coming months. Details about the Android-based device are scarce, however, and Motorola's Co-Chief Executive Sanjay Jha would only say that the company hopes to be able to release the tablet "early next year."

The Motorola tablet would join an increasing number of devices that are hoping to rival Apple's popular iPad. Dell launched its Android-based Streak smartphone/tablet earlier this summer, and Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy Tab, another Android device, later on Thursday. While the iPad has a strong foothold in the market — Apple has sold millions of the devices since its launch earlier this year — it may be difficult for Apple to retain its dominance as the level of competition increases.

Motorola Tablet: A Brief History

Rumors of a Motorola tablet have been around for almost a year now. Last December, Boy Genius Report posted pictures of a rumored Android-based tablet from Motorola, and the company showed off a prototype device at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. And just this spring, Motorola's Jha confirmed that the company was interested in developing an Android-based mobile device with a 7- to 10-inch screen.

Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference in San Francisco on Thursday, Jha reiterated that Motorola is interested in the tablet market, as long as it can deliver a worthwhile device. "I will only develop a tablet if it is sufficiently compelling," he said, according to a report from AFP.

Android Upgrade

What would make the tablet compelling, Jha said, is a more advanced version of the Android operating system. The current 2.x version of Android is optimized for smartphones, he said, and is not ready for use in tablet computers.

And based on our hands-on tests of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Jha just may be right about Android. PCWorld Contributor Harry McCracken spent some time using the Galaxy Tab at this week's IFA show in Berlin, and noted that while the Android 2.2-based device is "intriguing," it's currently limited to running mostly "blown-out smartphone applications," not apps specifically designed for use on the Galaxy Tab's 7-inch screen.

Wait and See

Perhaps Motorola's decision to wait a few months makes sense, then -- even if it does mean that the company's tablet won't be ready for the holiday shopping season. Motorola has experience in this area: The company wasn't the first to offer an Android-based smartphone to rival Apple's wildly successful iPhone. But it was one of the first to truly succeed in competing with the iPhone, when it launched the first-generation Motorola Droid in November 2009. The Droid launched just as consumers were really getting excited about Android-based phones, and sales of the device were strong from the beginning.

Android's appeal — and market share — has only grown since the first Droid launched last year. Motorola has since launched two more Android-based smartphones (the Droid X and the Droid 2), so the company has only become more familiar with manufacturing hardware that will run Google's mobile OS. But so, too, has Samsung, which had a good amount of success launching its Galaxy S line of Android-based smartphones this summer. Samsung's Galaxy Tab may be able to capitalize on that momentum — freezing out the Motorola tablet when it launches sometime next year.

More Choices, Better Options

However the market for Android- and iOS-based tablets shakes out, there's one thing we know for sure: More choices for consumers is definitely a good thing. Tablet shoppers will no longer be limited to just the iPad, and a little competition should keep all of the tablet manufacturers working hard to keep consumers happy.

Amcom expands communication at Emory U

Written by Editorial Staff
September 15, 2010

Communication software provider Amcom Software has been selected by Emory University for its smartphone messaging and pager replacement offering, Amcom Mobile Connect, to improve communication between university staff members.

According to the Eden Prairie, Minn.-based company, the technology simplifies the process of sending messages and tracking responses among BlackBerry and Android devices, iPhones and other smartphone-carrying staff for code alerts, patient updates, lab results and consult requests.

Additionally, Atlanta-based Emory’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), will integrate its existing Amcom contact center software for web-based employee directory and on-call scheduling, emergency notifications and automated speech-based call processing, Amcom stated.

Best Buy: iPad cutting into laptop sales

by Lance Whitney

ipad

Is the iPad cannibalizing laptop sales?
(Credit: Apple)

Has the iPad affected consumer demand for Netbooks and notebooks? Recent comments by Best Buy's CEO say that Apple's popular tablet is chopping away at laptop sales.

Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that internal estimates showed the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50 percent.

Best Buy reported solid second-quarter earnings on Tuesday, thanks in part to strong iPad sales. But the company also said it lost market share for the quarter due to limited inventory for the iPad.

The retail chain starting carrying Apple's tablet as the device went on sale in the U.S. in early April. But Best Buy quickly ran out of inventory since it stocked the iPad in only around half of its nationwide stores. The company announced this week that the tablet would be available on September 26 in all its retail outlets.

The comments by Dunn echo findings from other sources that notebook and Netbook demand is being slowed by the onslaught of the iPad.

A column in today's Fortune Magazine points to a new report from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty claiming that "tablet cannibalization," mostly by the iPad, is at least partially to blame for the downturn in notebook sales over the past eight or nine months. Huberty's latest report follows a similar one issued in May in which she forecast that tablets would prove a big threat to Netbooks.

To back up her findings, Huberty also cited statistics from NPD Group showing that growth in notebooks dropped 4 percent in August from the prior year, the first time those numbers turned negative. Fortune quoted Huberty's conclusion that "we expect tablets to continue to pressure PCs as more vendors launch products (e.g., Dell Streak and Samsung Tab) and Apple expands its iPad distribution."

Other analysts have also been eyeing the impact on the laptop market from tablets. In early July, Barclays Capital issued a report saying that Wintel (Windows and Intel) laptops would take a hit because of the growth of the iPad and rival tablets. A June report from DisplaySearch found that the iPad was already grabbing market share from Netbooks and that momentum was shifting from Netbooks to tablets.

Demand for the iPad has prompted several analysts to up their sales forecasts for the device. In July, ABI Research said it expected Apple to ship around 11 million iPads by the end of the year, while iSuppli predicted that 12.9 million iPads should ship this year, a huge jump from its April forecast of 7.1 million units.

Of course, if the iPad is cannibalizing laptop sales, the news isn't exactly disappointing to Apple. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook expressed his sentiment in July when the company announced third-quarter earnings.

"Our guts tell us that this market is very big...," Cook said. "If it turns out that iPad cannibalizes PCs, that's fantastic for us because there is a lot of PCs to cannibalize."

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

In my travels to other countries, I was always happy to find people who spoke English, street signs in English, and people working behind hotel counters who could speak English. Even in places where the local language was written in very different script—like Chinese or Arabic.

Hispanic Americans By the Numbers

Population

48.4 million million
The estimated Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2009, making people of Hispanic origin the nation's largest ethnic or race minority. Hispanics constituted 16 percent of the nation's total population. In addition, there are approximately 4 million residents of Puerto Rico, a Caribbean U.S. territory. [source] From the U.S. Census Bureau.

I really cracks me up to hear some very ignorant American people complaining about the use of the Spanish language in the United States. I hear them say things like, "let them learn English if they come to this country." Listening closer, you may find that the person doing the complaining can barely speak the English language themselves—at least speak it correctly. Horrible grammar, and words that no one would understand unless they were born in the same area, is common. Here are some examples:

  • "Youins" (you plural, or all of you)
  • "Ya'll" (you plural, or all of you)
  • and even "All ya'll" (you plural, or all of you)
  • "I seen you at the store yesterday." (I saw you at the store yesterday.)
  • "Have you et yet?" (Have you eaten?)
  • "He cut hisself shaving" (He cut himself shaving.)

I am proud to be bilingual English/Spanish. Learning to speak the Spanish language was the most difficult and the most rewarding thing that I ever did.
