Wireless News Aggregation

Saturday — November 7, 2015 — Issue No. 682

Dear Friends of Wireless Messaging,

Welcome back to The Wireless Messaging News.

As a beginning salesman at Motorola Communications about 40 years ago, I was taught to “under sell and over perform” as opposed to “over sell and under perform.”

I think that my mentors would be proud of me, at least in how I strongly promoted the Critical Messaging Association conference that ended yesterday.

The truth is: It was even better than I said it was going to be.

So this short issue of the weekly newsletter only contains ten snapshots taken with my iPhone—the highlights.

A regular newsletter will follow next week.

The main thought that I came away with is simply this, a person could go to any one of the best collages or universities, and take some classroom courses to help them manage a paging or wireless messaging business. I am guessing that the courses would be very interesting, would be taught by highly qualified academics. I am also guessing that the material taught would be of little or no practical use in the present-day, real-world of our industry.

On the other hand, the speakers at this conference were some of the best I have ever heard, and most importantly they are currently, and successfully involved in what I am calling “the present-day, real-world of our industry.”

PAUL LAUTTAMUS

Paul Lauttamus, President
Lauttamus Communications & Security
www.lauttamus.com

Paul's presentation was about diversification. He has taken his dad's business and grown it into several strong divisions. His dad was my friend and a respected leader in our industry.

Lauttamus Communications & Security

  • Paging
    • Paging Service
    • Paging System Maintenance
  • Two-way Radio
    • sales, support and service
  • Telephone Answering Services
    • in 30+ states
  • Security solutions
    • consult, install, and monitor
  • Towers
  • Consulting Services

So Paul's presentation was like taking a quick grad-school course in business, but with real examples of how to successfully diversify your business in “the present-day, real-world of our industry” — one of the best that I have ever heard.

JIM NELSON

Jim Nelson, President & CEO
Prism Systems International, Inc.
www.prismpaging.com

Jim Nelson and I have been friends and colleagues since the early 80's. Jim is not a polished salesman (with a shinny briefcase), blabbing about products, and systems that he doesn't understand. He has all these many years of experience and has worked for the manufacturers of the two most important parts of paging infrastructure, paging terminals (now correctly called switches, and paging transmitters. Jim worked with me at BBL Industries when they were the world leader in paging terminals. He also worked at Quintron, the manufacturer of the best paging transmitter in its day. He knows what he is talking about.

Jim spoke about the many things that his company is doing in “the present-day, real-world of our industry.”

The nay-sayers who are always saying that paging is dead, would be surprised at how well Jim, and his partner John Bishop, are doing at Prism Systems International.

ROY POTTLE

Roy Pottle, Chairman & CEO
American Messaging Services, LLC
www.americanmessaging.net

What more can I say more than “this gentleman manages one of the largest paging companies in the world and is doing a good job of it.” He spoke about the present and future value of paging companies. I am sure that his message was surprising to some, but it was based on the reality of “the present-day, real-world of our industry.” With his background in finance, I can't think of anyone more qualified than he to speak on this topic. To top it all, he bought my lunch as the conference was starting.

KEN HARDMAN

No Photo

Kenneth E. Hardman
Attorney At Law
Washington, DC

Ken Hardman is a great guy and has been involved with paging-legal issues for many years. I can't tell you what he talked about, but it was about “the present-day, real-world of our industry” in his town—if you know what I mean. Many members of the CMA say that the cost of their membership more than covers the value of Ken's legal advice. This was very good information that he provided.

Now on to the photos of the conference.

About Us

A new issue of the Wireless Messaging Newsletter is posted on the web each week. A notification goes out by e-mail to subscribers on most Fridays around noon central US time. The notification message has a link to the actual newsletter on the web. That way it doesn’t fill up your incoming e-mail account.

There is no charge for subscription and there are no membership restrictions. Readers are a very select group of wireless industry professionals, and include the senior managers of many of the world’s major Paging and Wireless Messaging companies. There is an even mix of operations managers, marketing people, and engineers — so I try to include items of interest to all three groups. It’s all about staying up-to-date with business trends and technology.

I regularly get readers’ comments, so this newsletter has become a community forum for the Paging, and Wireless Messaging communities. You are welcome to contribute your ideas and opinions. Unless otherwise requested, all correspondence addressed to me is subject to publication in the newsletter and on my web site. I am very careful to protect the anonymity of those who request it.

I spend the whole week searching the Internet for news that I think may be of interest to you — so you won’t have to. This newsletter is an aggregator — a service that aggregates news from other news sources. You can help our community by sharing any interesting news that you find.

Editorial Policy

Editorial Opinion pieces present only the opinions of the author. They do not necessarily reflect the views of any of advertisers or supporters. This newsletter is independent of any trade association.
