Happy Thanksgiving

(Thanksgiving in the United States)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a public holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after Congress requested a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall/winter holiday season in the U.S. The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted three days, and—as accounted by attendee Edward Winslow—it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating “thanksgivings”—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.

This Week's Headlines

  • This issue is one that I am proud of since I believe it makes an important contribution to the Paging industry by sharing important information. I refer to the recent outages of Paging systems caused by certain models of the Trimble ThunderBolt GPS receiver and disciplined oscillator (GPS-DO). Near the end of this issue, in the LETTERS TO THE EDITOR section you will find a lot of very important information. There is info there that will benefit engineers responsible for Paging system maintenance as well as a basic tutorial for those just learning about how The Global Positional System (GPS) works. For some reason, York County, Pennsylvania has been getting most of the news coverage about this outage, but there have been several other Paging systems—in various parts of the country—affected. Still, there is a lot of mis-information going around. You can get the straight scoop here.

No Issue This Week

The first issue of this newsletter came out on February 7, 2002. Last week’s issue was dated February 10, 2017 and that was issue number 744. That’s an issue “almost” every Friday for fifteen years. I haven’t missed very many Fridays, but I am going to take a sick day this week. There are so many cases of the flu and flu-like symptoms going around here in the Midwest that many of the schools have been closing. I was tested for the flu and it came back “negative” so I guess it could have been worse. I am a lot better than I was but still not over whatever bug I have. Hope to see you again next week.

Best regards,

Brad Dye
